Being an art collector is an immensely powerful role
Art collectors are incredibly culturally powerful. Here’s why.
Artists are meaning makers. We derive almost everything from the artists. They are the producers of culture—fashion, language, design, music. They are the taste makers. They shape the way we understand the culture around us. They also play the critical role of helping us feel and understand the world we live in.
We can process our lives and our society through art. We do it unconsciously all the time. We rely on artists to give depth and meaning to the chaos and constant change of our lives. We rely on artists to lead the way through movements and social change.
Artists also point us to our potential. Artists are imaginative. They work in the imaginal realm. They show us what is possible for ourselves, for our society, and for the globe. Both optimistic and dystopian. That’s so powerful and energizing.
So the artists are essential. And art collectors are essential to artists.
Art collectors extend the reach and capacity of these artists. By funding their work you provide them with the capacity to produce more, to reach further and become more impactful.
When you’re a true art collector and serve as a steward of the arts you can play the pivotal role of extending their network by displaying their work in spaces other people encounter it, opening doors for them to other potential collectors or funding opportunities, and connecting them to your personal network.
But this isn’t just silent, behind-the-scenes of the artists. An empowered art collector has an elevated position.
People look to people who understand the arts.
People are overwhelmed about art (read my article on how the art world has failed for more on that), and if you navigate your way successfully into the title of Art Collector you have the authority to point people to the artists whose art you align with, who you think are doing important work in the world.
As an art collector you get to elevate into the broader culture the pieces that you feel should be seen more. You put muscle behind their efforts. You do the essential work of carrying their message and impact into rest of society.
That is hugely powerful. And it can be subtle and obscure if you want it to be. But it can also be a significant component of who you, of what you talk about on your social media, in your gatherings, with your colleagues.
Being an art collector has range. It has such a range because it’s highly sought after and makes you such an interesting, culturally savvy person. The rest of us look to those people.
And it’s badly needed. So on behalf of all artists, thank you for any nudge you give this movement of letting art lead the way.
P.S. did you know that art collectors and patrons are an ancient role? Read about the history here. Oh and if you do read that article, take note of the fact that it stops in 1980. Over 40 years ago. In the time since we have culturally experienced a dearth of support for the arts.
This movement of new art collectors is necessary, overdue, and spring loaded with potential. Join it. We really want you here.
