I first came across Rebennack’s work a number of years ago, and fell completely in love. What I first saw was a video of him making the work and was mesmerized. The intentional way he works with the lines, the breathing, the rhythm. Check out my instagram feed for the video, it’s well worth the detour.

His pieces are a meditation. I have a print of his in our home. It sits across from our black couch where I often go when I am first waking up, gazing out until my coffee has been downed. It makes such a peaceful awakening. The lines are exhales, are poems. It is so simple and so captivating.

I think a lot about movement in art. I want my art to either have tension, stillness or flow to it. And I like pairing pieces together in a room that play with these themes. These pieces are all flow to me, but in a spacious manner, a patient manner, moving but gently, the way a chest rises in sleep.

Mark J. Rebennack is an American abstract artist based in Long Beach, California. His current Exhale series focuses on minimalist linework based on his breath. Each line, one breath.

About his work Rebennack says:

“I am inspired by the everyday art, artists, languages, thoughts, colors, comments, jokes, news headlines, memories, music, motivations and silences. Having studied art, and now teaching it, I have had the experiences needed in order to develop my philosophies about the creation of art as a viewer, a collector, a student, an advocate and a practitioner. I believe in art for art's sake. I believe in the power of creativity. I believe that you must first know the rules before you can break them. I believe that artists that become complacent are at risk of failing themselves as much as the viewers. I believe in the universality of mark-making.”
